Gisborne is your gate way to the East coast, discover all the secrets and treasures of the worlds edge.
Gisborne city is the capital of the east coast region also known as Eastland, East Coast or Tairawhiti.

The Gisborne region is so close to the edge that we are the birth place of the sun making us the first city in the world to see the light of the new day. The people who live here nurture the sun and share their warmth with the rest of New Zealand and the world. The Gisborne Region covers a land area of 8,265 square kilometres on the eastern coast of the North Island of New Zealand. This is approximately 4.9% of New Zealand's total land area. The region stretches from just north of Morere thermal springs and Mahia Peninsular in the south to include the East Cape and Potaka township to the east of Opotiki. Our neighbouring regions are Hawkes Bay to the south and the Bay of Plenty to the north west. The gisborne

Wine Varieties...

Chardonnay
Soft, lush, tropical fruit forward Chardonnay is Gisborne's signature wine, encompassing everything from excellent-value-for-money, very approachable (meaning they make good drinking even when young) styles to top-of-the-range, rich, complex award-winning styles. Although the region's Chardonnays have a deserved reputation for youthful appeal, many of those same wines also age extremely well.

Chenin Blanc
Ripe honeysuckle and quince aromas, with warm honeyed (slightly botrysised) flavours and clipped acid finishes are the hallmarks of the varietal Chenin Blancs crafted by Gisborne's leading producers, such as The Millton Vineyard.

Gewurztraminer
Arguable, the best wine-growing region in the country for Gewürztraminer, Gisborne produces a range of styles: among them elegant, floral-scented, rose-petal wines, through to super-rich, spicy, complex mouth-filling styles. Gisborne has a celebrated reputation for Gewürztraminer - it was here that the country's first benchmark wines were produced by Matawhero Wines in the 1970s.

Merlot
Soft, plummy reds with vibrant fruit flavours which suit early drinking. In exceptional years, Gisborne Merlots rival some of New Zealand's more classic styles.

Muller Thurgau
Gisborne Muller-Thurgau shows very distinctive floral, citrus characters and compares very favourably with the best wines produced in the variety's homeland, Germany.

Muscat
Gisborne produces a handful of outstanding varietal Muscats - scenty, spicy, lush, fruit-flavoured wines with obvious grapey flavours and great mouth-feel. At present, most Gisborne-grown Muscat disappears into Montana's popular sparkling wine, Bernadino.

Semillon
Soft, lush, tropical fruit forward Chardonnay is Gisborne's signature wine, encompassing everything from excellent-value-for-money, very approachable (meaning they make good drinking even when young) styles to top-of-the-range, rich, complex award-winning styles. Although the region's Chardonnays have a deserved reputation for youthful appeal, many of those same wines also age extremely well. One of Gisborne's fortes: delicious crisp lime and melon tropical fruit-flavoured varietal wines, which make an excellent alternative to Sauvignon Blanc.

Pinot Noir
Most Gisborne-grown Pinot Noir goes into sparkling wine. The variety yields well in the region, producing the ripe flavours at low Brix (sugar levels) necessary to craft quality methode traditionelle. But Gisborne also produces a sprinkling of exceptional, ripe-flavoured Pinot Noirs, grown carefully on selected sites.

Viognier
In the 1989 New Zealand grape variety register there is no mention of the grape Viognier In New Zealand in 2005 there were 55 ha planted with this predicted to rise to 128 ha in 2008. The majority of the plantings are fairly equally spread between Gisborne and Hawkes Bay with smaller experimental plantings in the other regions .Among the pioneers of the variety have been Te Mata Estate in the Hawkes Bay and The Millton Vineyard and TW Wines in Gisborne.
While the plantings of Viognier have been dramatically increasing all over the world, in perspective, the amount is still very small compared to the other major white varieties.
